Teacher to teacher

One of the primary roles of the school library media specialist is to support teaching and learning. I will be happy and available to collaborate with you -

  • to create pathfinders for any type of research project,
  • to access resources for your teaching in multiple formats,
  • to suggest ways to integrate educational technology into your teaching,
  • to integrate information handling skills into your subject area as required. Please contact me if I may provide any help!

The school library and librarian serve the entire learning community. This means that we not only have to select resources which support the school curriculum, but also your own professional development. Please feel free to come in and browse our Teacher Collection at any time!

Using Edmodo

In 2010, a library survey showed that over 80% of our students had internet access at home. To take full advantage of the e Connect and Learm program and our learners' exceptionally wired status, we will be implementing the use of a course management system to create a virtual learning environment within our school.

Edmodo is a free and secure social learning network for schools.  Imagine Moodle - but friendlier! It looks very much like Facebook but each group can only be accessed with a code, generated by a teacher. Members can post messages for all other group members to see and reply, so that makes it a great platform for discussions and also discourages abuse. You can also share files, photos, videos and more.  This year, the Form 1 Library & Information Literacy program will be using it to go paperless; I can assign homework and projects that students then submit back in Edmodo.  There is even a grading feature! Once students join, parents can be given a code to view assignments, contact teachers and message their children. Edmodo’s Communities can also be used between teachers to share lesson ideas.

To get started, just click here and create your account. Then you simply look in the left sidebar where it says GROUPS, click on JOIN and enter the SJCPOS teachers' code. Please see me or any of the library staff for the code details. We will also be offering short 30-45 minute workshops on using Edmodo. This email address is being protected from spambots. These materials are published in the Notes section and are for use by teachers and students for their own purposes. Teachers are encouraged to participate by utilising the resources in their class or by publishing their own notes for the benefit of students and other teachers around the Caribbean.

About Glogster

Glogster is a powerful tool for teaching and learning. It’s an poster creation tool that they can use to create online collages with sound and video, that can be shared with their friends and classmates. Glogster for Education gives teachers the ability to create accounts for their classrooms. All Form 1 students have Glogster accounts that can be used for any subject area; literature teachers may want to use Glogster to create book reports and or character portrayals, history, social studies and geography teachers can choose creating Glogster collages as a way for students to present their learning instead of expensive and bulky paper products. The collages our students create could even be part of larger collaborative project like creating a wiki on a particular unit.

The Global Classroom

This year, I have been asked to be part of a project called the Global Classroom; to be part of a team that will create & manage online collaborative spaces for teachers and students to share, learn and collaborate on a global stage. So far there are some 50 members in 15 countries spread over 6 continents. This prpject is an amazing opportunity to build global connections, promote cross cultural understanding and build our collaborative expertise. Ideas have been submitted for cultural exchanges, Skype hookups, global book clubs, Flat Stanleys, mascot exchanges, shared science projects, environmental awareness projects (one based on the Eco Warrior unit I do with the Form 1s!), WWII comparative history studies...

If you have a project that you would like to do with our kids and believe it and they could benefit from collaborating with learners in other countries, please This email address is being protected from spambots.
